In the field of organic functional materials science, Uchida’s research group is researching the synthesis of photochromic compounds and their use in functional materials. To date, this includes the discovery of a type of superhydrophobicity whereby changes caused by light irradiation cause water droplets to roll off the surface like lotus leaves, and creating a surface that prevents water droplets from falling despite being superhydrophobic.

The recent discovery of a mechanism for inducing cell death and the potential for this discovery to lead to cancer treatment, discovered through joint research with Ryukoku University, University of Yamanashi, and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, has also been attracting interest.
